Pinion Introduces Revolutionary E-Drive System Combining Motor and Gearbox

For the 2024 model year, renowned brands such as Rotwild, Simplon, and Bulls will be launching their e-MTBs equipped with the Pinion E-Drive System. Additionally, Kettler, Flyer, Tout Terrain, Pegasus, Zemo, and I:SY will introduce e-trekking bikes, e-cargo bikes, and e-compact bikes integrated with this advanced system. Various brands will also feature Speed Pedelecs with Pinion E-LINES series MGUs in their lineup.
Flexibility through Modular Design
Pinion’s modular approach to designing the E-Drive System has allowed them to create different configurations and versions of the MGU. Depending on specific use-cases, each version offers either 9 or 12 gears, which can be effortlessly shifted using electric controls. Furthermore, the system software is available in two base tunes, namely ‘Comfort’ and ‘Performance,’ catering to individual preferences.
48-Volt Technology and Impressive Torque
All MGU versions are based on 48-volt technology and provide approximately 85 Nm of torque, surpassing conventional motors without integrated gearboxes. However, it’s important to note that direct comparisons of output shaft values with ordinary mid-motors are not applicable due to the integrated gearbox. In the first four gears, the MGU delivers up to 160 Nm of torque to the rear wheel. The peak power output for the system is 600 watts, rising to 800 watts for the S-pedelec versions.
Efficiency and Ease of Maintenance
“The MGU is centrally located and positioned low in the bottom bracket area, resulting in optimal weight distribution for the e-bike. Our MGU, equipped with integrated shifting technology, operates virtually free from wear and requires nothing more than an oil change every 10,000 km,” Pinion stated in their launch announcement. Additionally, the Pinion E-Drive System boasts semi-automatic shifting capability, enhancing the overall riding experience.

Every Pinion unit is developed in Germany and assembled at the company’s headquarters near Stuttgart.
